Invitation

Inauguration: Saturday 04.02.2017, 4.30 pm
Exhibition curated by: Stefano Ferrari and Nicoletta Ossanna Cavadini

The exhibition pays homage to one of the most refined scholars of classical culture – a fascinating figure and the father of the modern discipline of art history – by rediscovering his fundamental printed work titled “Monumenti antichi inediti”. It also presents all the splendid illustrations contained in the 2-volume first edition of 1767. This was an immense undertaking, with a vision that was absolutely innovative for its day.
The exhibition also presents 2 preparatory manuscripts, 20 engraved copperplates, 14 proof prints, 5 engraved portraits, 2 oil paintings, 1 painting never exhibited before, 46 antique books and 3 precious relics from the MANN-Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples: a gem with Jupiter striking down the giants with a thunderbolt, a marble bas-relief with Paris and Aphrodite, and a fresco of Pompeii with the Trojan horse.
The exhibition has been inserted by the prestigious Winckelmann-Gesellschaft of Stendal (the author’s home town) in the calendar of the Jubilee 2017 to mark the third centenary of Winckelmann’s birth. It enjoys the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and is promoted in collaboration with the MANN-Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, which will host the second stage of the integrated project, within the framework of the strategic strand of “The MANN in the World”.
